Can You Use CBD for Focus and Energy?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant. While it is found in lower concentrations in marijuana, it is most abundant in hemp. How Does CBD Work?

This includes motor skills, pain perception, cognitive function, mood, sleep, and appetite. In short, the endocannabinoid system is thought to keep our body in a state of homeostasis.

The endocannabinoid system contains neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids. These are simply cannabinoids naturally produced by the body. It also has receptors that interact with the endocannabinoids. Together, they are believed to communicate with different parts of the body to help it function.

Studies on how exactly CBD and the endocannabinoid system interact are ongoing. However, it is believed that CBD has a low affinity for these receptors in the system, but is still able to impact the endocannabinoid system by influencing how the receptors react with other cannabinoids. This means it may help the endocannabinoid system function and reach homeostasis.

Research on CBD for Energy

Research has shown some insight into how people may be able to use CBD for energy, but studies focused directly on CBD and energy are currently limited. However, initial research has unveiled some insight into how exactly CBD may promote energy.

In a 2008 animal study, researchers administered CBD directly to wake-inducing areas of the brain: the lateral hypothalamus (LH) and dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN). Researchers found that CBD increased energy in the animal models, writing: “our data demonstrate(s) that administrations of CBD into either LH or DRN during the lights-on period increased wakefulness and decreased SWS [slow wave sleep] and REMS [REM sleep] in rats.” They also concluded that CBD was likely wake-inducing because it activated neurons in these areas of the brain.

This study shows promising results, although further research will need to be conducted before definitive statements can be made of CBD’s effects on our energy levels.


Other Ways CBD May Help with Energy Levels

In addition to the findings from the above study, there are a few other studies that have shown how CBD may help boost energy levels indirectly.

Studies have indicated that CBD may improve mood, which in turn may give you the energy boost you need to get through your day. Researchers have shown that CBD interacts with 5-HT1A receptors, which are responsible for stimulating the production of serotonin. Serotonin (also known as 5-HT) is a neurotransmitter that is known as a feel-good “happy chemical.” Lower levels of serotonin are associated with fatigue.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean CBD boosts serotonin levels, it might affect how receptors respond to serotonin in the body. This is demonstrated in a 2014 animal study, where researchers found that CBD had effects on these receptors that resulted in anti-depressant and anti-anxiety benefits. Further research on CBD’s potential for boosting mood needs to be conducted, but this shows promising results into how it may work.

In addition to its potential to boost mood, CBD may promote a good night’s sleep, which of course, leads to better energy levels (as well as a stronger ability to focus). This was shown in a 2013 animal study, where researchers found that CBD helped the subjects increase their total sleep time. Additionally, in a 2019 study, researchers found that patients who reported poor sleep quality saw an improvement in their quality of sleep within a month of taking CBD.

Of course, you may be wondering how CBD can both improve sleep and boost energy. Research into both areas is still ongoing, but it is believed that higher doses of CBD have a more sedative effect, while lower doses help with wakefulness.


Research on CBD for Focus

As is the case with energy, the research looking specifically at using CBD for focus is limited. However, a few smaller studies have emerged over the past few years. One of the most prominent is a 2017 study in which researchers examined how cannabinoids may help those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. This disorder can be characterized in part by difficulty focusing on a single task for an extended period of time. 

In the study, 30 adults with ADHD were given Sativex, a drug approved in the UK that contains both CBD and THC. Researchers saw trends towards improvement in inattention in the patients, although they did conclude that more research needed to be done.

Other Ways CBD May Help with Focus

Although more studies looking directly into CBD for focus are needed, other studies have demonstrated how CBD may indirectly help with concentration by relieving other distracting symptoms.

CBD may help reduce stress, which in turn may improve focus. Many people are all too familiar with stress impeding their daily tasks. When anxious thoughts are constantly running through our minds, it’s difficult to focus fully on what needs to be done.

Early research has suggested that CBD may be able to reduce stress. For example, in a preliminary report, researchers used neuroimaging and found that CBD had anxiolytic properties, meaning it may reduce anxiety. The exact way CBD produces this effect is unknown, and more research needs to be done to verify these results. However, researchers confirmed that CBD showed these properties in both animal and human models.

In addition to stress, physical symptoms can also distract us from getting everything done that needs to get done. Pain – whether it be muscle tension from inflammation or a headache – makes it difficult to focus on any task at hand. 

Animal research has just begun around inflammation and CBD. In a 2013 study, animal models of multiple sclerosis were given CBD. Researchers of this study found that the CBD may help protect against the effects of inflammation.
