Topicals for Winter Hydration
The last of Autumn is quickly slipping away, and the Winter season is not far. In some parts of the US, there will soon be much colder temperatures and perhaps even snow. Winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to hitting the snowy slopes for some skiing, sledding, and snowboarding, while others would rather go ice skating or snowshoeing.
Whatever the case, the exposure to the elements, as well as coming home to the heat or fireplace in your house, can dry out the skin quickly, leaving it itchy, tight, and uncomfortable. Even if you stay mostly indoors, skin can still get flaky and chapped around the lips and edges of the nose, causing much irritation. Chapped, tight skin can also limit the enjoyment of the outdoors.
At Strength of Hope, we make sure every single one of our topicals is great for the skin, but what you might not know is that many of them are great for skin hydration as well.
This blog will go into our favorite topicals to rehydrate and reinvigorate your skin. It will also cover how these same topicals can help with sore muscles and joints after a long day of winter sports.
What benefits may CBD, in addition to our premium essential oils and natural compounds, have for the skin? We’ll get started with that below.
Your Skin and CBD
Did you know that the skin is the human body’s largest organ? You might be surprised to know that your skin even has its own immune system. It protects the body from infection from viruses, bacteria, and other harmful substances using several kinds of skin cells.
You might have heard of the endocannabinoid system, which has only recently been discovered. There is currently much ongoing research around the endocannabinoid system, but there is some evidence that the endocannabinoid system may help regulate many body functions. Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body, including in the skin.
Some recent studies suggest that our cutaneous (related to the skin) endocannabinoid system may help regulate and balance skin cell growth, skin cell survival, and skin cells’ immune competence.
This could mean, according to the conclusions of this study, that “the targeted manipulation of the ECS (aiming to normalize the unwanted skin cell growth, sebum production, and skin inflammation) might be beneficial in a multitude of human skin diseases.”
A clinical trial was conducted in 2019 around CBD-enriched ointment, skin disorders, and scarring. Twenty patients with skin disorders that included psoriasis and atopic dermatitis were included in the trial. The patients were instructed to apply CBD-enriched ointment to lesioned skin twice daily for three months.
According to the clinical trial, “the results showed that topical treatment with CBD-enriched ointment significantly improved the skin parameters, the symptoms, and the PASI index score” (or rating of severity for psoriasis.)
The same trial also concluded that “The topical administration of CBD ointment, without any THC, is a safe and effective non-invasive alternative for improving the quality of life in patients with some skin disorders, especially on the inflammatory background.”
This is the first of many clinical trials, and research is just the beginning, but the promising results are exciting in the world of skin disorders.
What does this mean for your skin? It means that while CBD shows promise for helping with various skincare issues, how and why CBD may help the skin scientifically is yet to be proven.
So far, it is believed that CBD and other phytocannabinoids interact with the cannabinoid system. Still, CBD should not be used as a substitution for a dermatologist, nor is it intended to treat any skin disorder or disease.
Is CBD Safe?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD is generally safe and well-tolerated in humans, and no physical dependence effects have been reported.
Much more research is needed into the long-term side effects of CBD.
